Several feared dead in suspected underground gas incident at Bogoso-Prestea mine

A suspected underground gas incident at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in the Western Region has left multiple miners feared dead, with early accounts suggesting that many of the affected individuals may have been illegal miners operating within the concession.
Preliminary information indicates that the victims are believed to have suffocated after an unidentified smoke, suspected to have resulted from a blast, filled the underground tunnels with carbon gas.
The situation reportedly unfolded at the level 8 and level 9 sections of the mine, which is currently under the management of Heath Goldfields.
The exact number of fatalities remains unclear. Different sources suggest varying figures, with some reporting as many as 30 deaths, while others put the number at 11.
These figures relate to bodies said to have been retrieved earlier in the day. As of 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, three additional bodies had been recovered from level 9 and brought to the surface.
