She deserves her appointment – Free Zones CEO reveals how Bawumia’s former Aide helped NDC win power

Dr. Mary Awusi, CEO of Free Zones, has come to the defence of newly appointed presidential staffer Rosemond Obeng, revealing that the young woman played a critical behind-the-scenes role in the NDC’s 2024 electoral victory.
Dr. Awusi said Rosemond—once associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—approached her ahead of the elections with a bold offer: to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its bid to reclaim power from the ruling government.
“Before the 2024 elections, Rosemond visited me at my home in East Legon,” Dr. Awusi stated in an interview on TV XYZ monitored by MyNewsGh.
“She came to pledge her loyalty to the NDC and shared valuable information that could give us a strategic edge.”
Despite the apparent sincerity of the gesture, Dr. Awusi admitted she was initially skeptical.
“To be honest, I feared she might have been planted as a spy,” she said.
“The political terrain was hostile, and we couldn’t afford to take chances.”
However, after weighing the risks and engaging in careful deliberation, Dr. Awusi said she chose to work with Rosemond— a decision she insists paid off significantly.
“The intelligence she shared was crucial. It really helped our campaign gain ground where it mattered most,” she affirmed.
Dr. Awusi added that there was even a point where she feared for Rosemond’s safety due to the sensitive nature of her defection.
“Out of concern, I personally appealed to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama to provide her with accommodation to ensure she was safe,” she revealed.
Amid growing concerns from sections of the NDC grassroots over Rosemond’s recent appointment, Dr. Awusi called for calm, stressing that her current role doesn’t fully reflect the sacrifices she made to help the party return to power.
“Let’s be honest—being named a presidential staffer is nothing compared to the quiet but powerful role she played in getting us here,” Dr. Awusi concluded. “She earned her place. Let’s show some gratitude and maturity.”
The revelation is expected to calm some of the unrest surrounding Rosemond’s inclusion in President Mahama’s team and sheds light on the complex alliances that shaped the outcome of the 2024 general elections.
