She should face questions, not ask them

Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng has condemned what he calls hypocrisy at the Public Accounts Committee, accusing chairperson Abena Osei Asare of benefiting from questionable contracts and still presiding over accountability hearings.

In a social media post sighted by MyNewsGh, the outspoken lawmaker argued that her prior role in government disqualifies her from demanding transparency from others.

“This same woman, not too long ago, was seen on live television passionately defending the then Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Rev Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, for refusing to disclose his age,” he said.

He cited high-profile contracts currently under scrutiny, naming the SML revenue contract, the ECG-Beijing Jao loss-reduction deal, and the Health Ministry’s ambulance procurement agreement.

“The OSP is currently investigating the validity of this contract and its financial implications for the nation,” he said of the SML deal.

“Investigators are now assessing whether proper procedures were followed,” he added regarding the ECG contract.

He found what he called the irony of parliamentary oversight deeply troubling.

“Her demeanor at committee hearings is not bravery, it is hypocrisy cloaked in authority,” he asserted.

“Her position interrogating state officials live on television transcends irony, it is a national disgrace.”

According to him, rather than posing questions, she should be answering them. “By this point, she should be facing inquiries by the committee herself, rather than posing them,” he said.
