Singaporean investor sues, alleges $1.5M NDC donation was a setup

A Singaporean businessman, Toh You Kang, has dragged Ghanaian authorities and individuals to court, claiming he was misled into donating $1.5 million to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election campaign.

According to Asaase News, the startling claims form part of a human rights lawsuit filed at the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra.

In his affidavit, Mr. Kang alleges that the funds—meant to support the NDC’s “24-hour economy” campaign—were handed over through Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore, the party’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman and a former MP for Adentan.

According to him, the money was used to produce T-shirts, caps, wristbands, and booklets for campaign promotion.

However, the heart of the lawsuit lies beyond just the campaign donation. Mr. Kang claims the financial contribution was positioned as a strategic investment to ease his entry into Ghana’s electricity cable market—a proposal he says was pitched by Ashie-Moore himself.

He further alleges that Ashie-Moore invoked the name of President John Dramani Mahama, assuring him that Mahama was fully aware of and endorsed the arrangement, a factor that gave Kang the confidence to commit more resources.

But things took a dark turn during a business trip to Ghana in May 2025, when Kang says he was unlawfully detained, physically assaulted, and denied legal counsel.

These experiences, according to him, violated his rights and compounded his financial losses.

As part of the lawsuit, the investor is now demanding GH¢20 million (about $1.6 million) in compensation.

He is also seeking the recovery of $800,000, which he says was paid upfront for contracts with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)—deals that never materialised.

While Ashie-Moore has denied any wrongdoing in a separate statement, describing the allegations of fraud and extortion as false, both the NDC and former President Mahama are yet to publicly respond to the claims.
