Social Security is a national responsibility – Vice President says as she celebrates SSNIT at 60

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has praised the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for its unwavering role in protecting Ghanaian workers and families over the past 60 years.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the launch of SSNIT’s 60th Anniversary, the Vice President highlighted the institution’s lasting impact and called for more inclusive reforms going forward.
“I served as the guest of honour at the launch of the 60th Anniversary of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). Since 1965, SSNIT has played a vital role in providing social protection for workers in Ghana and safeguarding the dignity of numerous families,” she stated.
Representing President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President extended warm congratulations to the SSNIT family.
“On behalf of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the entire SSNIT family. I commend the institution’s ability to remain dynamic and responsive across six decades, adapting to the needs of different generations.”
She also urged SSNIT to prioritize informal sector inclusion and stakeholder engagement in its next chapter.
“I urge SSNIT to continue strengthening and sustaining the scheme, particularly through greater inclusion of the informal sector and deeper stakeholder engagement to improve service delivery. I have full confidence in the current board and management to carry this legacy forward.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that social security is a right—not a privilege—and reaffirmed the government’s support in upholding its mission.
“As we mark this anniversary, we are reminded that social security is not a favour or charity; it is a national responsibility. This government remains committed to working with SSNIT to protect the integrity and security of Ghanaian citizens.”
