Some people tell me I’m too free, but that’s how I grew up – Davido reflects on fame

Afrobeats sensation Davido has never been one to put on airs or succumb to the pressure of fitting a particular mold. In his recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, he opened up about his personality, his relationship with fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid, and how he approaches his fame.
“I love everyone, man,” Davido shared, setting the tone for a candid conversation. He’s known for his outgoing, free-spirited personality, which contrasts sharply with the more enigmatic and mystical personas of some of his peers.
“I’m not a rebel like Burna Boy or mystical like Wizkid,” he said. “I’m just me. People know me as the outgoing, free guy. I’m not a rebel like Burna Boy or mystical like Wizkid, I can’t act that way.”
Davido’s straightforward approach to life is a hallmark of his character. Unlike many in the spotlight, he’s not trying to fit the stereotypical image of a celebrity. He explained that some people have even told him he might be “too free” for someone of his status.
“Some people tell me I’m too free, don’t I know I’m a superstar,” Davido added. “I’ll be like, if my dad walks past you right now, you wouldn’t know, so that’s how I grew up.”
This down-to-earth perspective comes from his upbringing, and it’s clear that he doesn’t let fame alter the way he interacts with the world around him. The Nigerian artist emphasized that he is still grounded, despite his massive success.
In another lighthearted moment, he revealed an amusing story about his manager, who often gets frustrated with him for being too casual, even in his own home.
“My manager gets mad at me for wearing slippers in the house,” he laughed. “There are people born artists, who come out of their room looking good.”
Despite his carefree nature, Davido made it clear that he knows how to balance his personal freedom with the demands of his career. His easygoing approach to life resonates with fans, giving them a glimpse of the real person behind the superstar persona.
