Speaker warns ‘horny’ male MPs against pretty Ablekuma North MP

Parliament saw both light-hearted banter and sharp political tension on Tuesday, July 23, 2025, as the Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was officially sworn into office.

During the ceremony, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin delivered a playful yet pointed caution to male MPs who appeared overly eager to interact with the newly elected lawmaker.

“The House is now blessed with the final member — a female — now increasing the number to 41 female members in the House. If this is not a blessing, what else?” Bagbin stated.

Amid laughter from members, the Speaker added, “And I saw some of you taking her telephone number… Please, Honourable Members, she is not in the market. She is not in the market, so please, don’t attempt.”

However, the swearing-in did not proceed without controversy.

Just moments before the oath was administered, the Minority Caucus staged a walkout in protest.

Their action followed the Speaker’s decision to deny Minority Chief Whip Frank Annor Dompreh the opportunity to deliver a statement before the official ceremony began.

Aubynn’s induction follows a tightly contested rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, which was necessitated after the Electoral Commission nullified the initial December 2024 results over irregularities, including unauthenticated pink sheets and vote tally discrepancies.

In the rerun held earlier this month, Ewurabena Aubynn narrowly defeated the NPP’s Akua Afriyie, garnering 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881.
