Stephen Atubiga cries on live TV over Bawku crisis

In a deeply emotional interview on UTV monitored by MyNewsGh, politician Stephen Atubiga broke down in tears as he spoke about the devastating impact of the long-running conflict in Bawku.

Visibly shaken, Atubiga said the situation has reached a point where he feels ashamed to identify as a native of the town.

“If it were up to me, I would change my identity and take an Akan name,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion.

Struggling to hold back tears, Atubiga described the pain of watching a town already deprived of basic infrastructure continue to destroy itself over a chieftaincy dispute. “It is not worth dying for. Nothing about this fight makes sense anymore,” he added.

Wiping away tears, he spoke about the deep frustration that comes with seeing lives and property wasted in a place that should be focusing on development.

“Bawku doesn’t even have the amenities you’d expect in a peaceful community. Yet, all we do is fight. There is nothing there to fight over.”

He revealed that out of compassion, he has been using his personal resources to support families affected by the unrest.

“I take care of many families from Bawku with my own money. But how long can this go on?” he asked, overcome with emotion. “We are stuck in poverty, in backwardness, and we are doing it to ourselves.”
