They said I was a good mechanic, then they grabbed me — Ataa Ayi’s former mechanic recounts ordeal
Yaw Asante Agyekum, once the personal mechanic to notorious Ghanaian armed robber Ataa Ayi, has spoken publicly about the painful memories of being wrongfully detained by the police, saying he was treated like a criminal for simply doing his job.
In a candid account while being interviewedby media personality Nana Aba Anamoah, Agyekum recalled the shock and confusion that unfolded the day he was arrested.
“I told them yes, and they said they had heard I was a good mechanic — that’s why they came to me. But while we were talking, they suddenly grabbed me and said I was under arrest.”
He said the incident occurred during a routine visit to his mother. What was supposed to be a peaceful day turned into a traumatic one.
“I cannot forget that day. I was just there to visit my mother, and suddenly I was being treated this way.
“They claim they were going to arrest another person and they made me walk that distance, while playing music.”
Agyekum, who maintains that he was only ever involved in car repairs and not crime, said the experience left a lasting scar on his spirit.
He insists he was never part of Ataa Ayi’s criminal operations and has since worked hard to clear his name.
