Students drown in Dikpe River while crossing to school

A group of students from Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region drowned while attempting to cross the Dikpe River on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, ten students were reportedly onboard a boat trying to make their way across the river when the incident occurred.
Sadly, only three of the students survived the accident.
Rescue efforts led to the discovery of three bodies shortly after the incident.
As of the time of reporting, a team of local divers and emergency responders are still combing the river in search of the remaining four missing students, believed to have drowned as well.
“This is devastating… only three of them survived. We’ve found three dead so far, and the search team is still looking for the remaining four,” an eyewitness shared social media.
The cause of the boat mishap remains unclear, but questions are being raised about the safety measures in place for students who regularly cross the river to attend school.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but the tragedy is expected to spark fresh national conversations around rural infrastructure and student safety in riverine communities.
