Sumankwaahene leads traditional worship for Queen Mother’s one-week observance

Traditional rites are being performed at the Manhyia Palace as the one-week observance of Nana Konadu Yiadom III is marked with solemn reverence.

At least five groups of priests and priestesses, each representing different deities, have gathered opposite the Queen’s residence to display their mystical powers and spiritual authority.
The ceremony is led by Otumfuo Sumankwaahene, Baffuor Asabre Kogyawoasu Ababio, who explained that such rituals are an essential part of both the one-week mourning and the burial rites.

“Deities were used to establish Asanteman. Today, the mother of the Asantehene has joined the ancestors, so we had to come to perform the needed rites.
“We will display till sunset and then continue with the burial. This bears testimony to the living spirit of Asante,” he told opemsuo.com.
The powerful displays, he added, reflect the community’s deep grief and highlight the enduring role of tradition in moments of collective mourning.
