Suspended Chief Justice’s press conference was illegal – Edudzi

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has strongly criticised suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo for publicly addressing the petition for her removal from office, describing her actions as “clearly illegal and untenable.”
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, June 28, Tameklo, who is also a legal practitioner, questioned the motive behind the Chief Justice’s decision to hold a press conference and disclose the details of an ongoing constitutional process.
“What the suspended Chief Justice did is clearly illegal and untenable. What does she seek to achieve by putting the details of the petition in public?” Tameklo queried, adding that the move could potentially undermine the integrity of judicial processes.
His sentiments echo concerns raised by Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, who believes Justice Torkornoo’s conduct further justifies her removal from office.
In an interview with Starr FM, Suhuyini slammed the suspended Chief Justice for breaching legal decorum by publicly commenting on impeachment proceedings that are still active.
“The people of this country pay to ensure that she benefits from those privileges. So the least she can do is to uphold and respect our laws,” Suhuyini stated, insisting that the office of Chief Justice demands discretion, neutrality, and adherence to due process—even in times of personal or institutional crisis.
Justice Torkornoo, who has come under fire for her public remarks, is currently facing a petition for removal, though the grounds remain contentious. Critics argue that her recent press engagement may have worsened her case, while supporters see it as a bold attempt to clarify her position.
