Tamale Central mourn MP Dr Murtala Mohammed

The people of Tamale Central are grieving following the death of their Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a tragic military helicopter crash.

The sad news has gripped the constituency, as mourners gathered at the NDC party office to grieve a man they considered not just a politician, but a brother and servant of the people. Cries of sorrow echoed through the crowds, many still struggling to accept the reality of his passing.

Dr Murtala, who also served as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, was on board the Ghana Air Force helicopter that lost radar contact after taking off from Accra. The aircraft was headed for Obuasi before it went down in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region.

Earlier that very morning, the MP had reached out to a party officer, asking him to notify local elders about an upcoming sod-cutting ceremony.

He assured them he would be back in the evening. He even sent funds to help settle hospital bills for some constituents—one final act that now feels symbolic of his life of service.

“He died on national duty. I believe Almighty Allah will pardon him,” said Umar Abdul Razak, the party’s local communication officer, holding back tears.

From paying medical bills to helping with school fees, Dr Murtala was known for his compassion beyond party lines.

One resident, Mohammed Musah, spoke of how many in the community depended on his generosity. “Now the question is—who will support these people?” he asked.

The tragedy has not only shaken the NDC family but left a void in Tamale Central that many say may never be filled.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, visited the bereaved family, leading a delegation to deliver the painful news.
