Taxi driver arrested with large cannabis haul in Accra

Police have arrested a taxi driver found transporting a large cache of suspected cannabis hidden inside fertiliser sacks.

The arrest took place on Monday, June 2, 2025, during a targeted intelligence-led operation by the National Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

The suspect, identified as Ernest Mohammed Adjiri, was driving a Hyundai i10 taxi bearing registration number GW 9832-22 when officers halted the vehicle for inspection.

Upon searching the taxi, officers uncovered three fertiliser sacks containing 120 slabs of compressed dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.

During questioning, Mr. Adjiri confessed ownership of the seized substances. He remains in police custody as authorities prepare to charge him in court.

Meanwhile, in a related crackdown, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) recently detained four individuals at Kotoka International Airport, thwarting attempts to smuggle large quantities of cannabis out of Ghana.

These arrests, made on Sunday, May 18, 2025, were a result of routine profiling and intelligence-driven operations conducted by NACOC officers.

Among those apprehended was 23-year-old British national Jada Chyna Brown-Frater. She was stopped during pre-boarding checks ahead of a British Airways flight to Gatwick.

A search of her luggage uncovered 32 slabs of cannabis weighing 17.72 kilograms. She was immediately taken into custody and is expected to face prosecution.
