Taxi driver reportedly drives passenger back to UPSA junction taxi rank over fare dispute

A taxi driver at the UPSA junction taxi rank has reportedly driven a passenger back to the pick-up point after a heated disagreement over fare payment.

The incident occurred after the passenger refused to pay the old fare following a recent directive to reduce transport fares by 15%.

According to a post shared on Twitter by popular blogger Sika Official, the passenger was taken back to the taxi rank instead of being dropped off at her intended destination.

The confrontation between the two escalated over the refusal to accept the revised fare structure.

The conflict highlights tensions following the recent announcement by the Ghana Private Transport Union (GPTU), which ordered a 15% fare reduction for commercial drivers in response to government calls for easing the cost of transport for commuters.

The directive, intended to alleviate the financial burden on passengers, has elicited mixed reactions, with some drivers being reluctant to comply, citing increased operational costs.

This latest episode at the UPSA junction underscores the challenges faced in implementing the fare reduction policy smoothly, as both commuters and drivers negotiate the new terms.

Transport authorities and the GPTU have urged both parties to cooperate and adhere to the directive to ensure a peaceful and fair transportation environment.
