That’s my voice – Waje opens up on singing P-Square’s hit ‘Do Me’ without credit

Veteran Nigerian singer Waje has revealed her early struggles in the music industry, revealing that despite being the iconic female voice on P-Square’s hit song “Do Me,” she was never paid or properly credited for her contribution.

Waje confirmed that the powerful vocals that defined the 2007 hit belonged to her. “If you do me, I do you, man no go vex… that ‘do me, do me’ part, na my voice,” she said with a laugh. “At the time, I didn’t make any money from it.”

The singer recalled how frustrating it was to hear her own voice dominating airwaves while getting no recognition.

“Imagine hearing your voice and being in Onitsha Main Market, telling people, ‘It’s my voice,’ and they’re just looking at you like, ‘Who are you?’” she shared. Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast monitored by MyNewsGhcom.

“Because I didn’t learn how this industry works back then, I had no credit, no pay.” Waje further revealed that she was informed about the music video shoot only after the fact.

“Uncle Chris had called me and told me they were going to South Africa to shoot the video,” she said, hinting that she was sidelined from the project’s visibility and promotion.

The “I Wish” hitmaker also reflected on her early interactions in the industry, recalling a moment of personal disappointment involving a colleague.

“You said something, and I’m going to start with my first experience with you,” she told one of the podcast hosts.

“You were very rude, and I remember reporting you to Omaume then because you broke my heart. I was sent to my food chain,” she added jokingly, showing that the memory still stings, but she’s learned to laugh about it.
