President John Dramani Mahama has outlined his administration’s bold commitment to strengthening Ghana’s agro-industrial base, with a focus on mechanisation, irrigation, and prioritising local production to drive his flagship 24-hour economy initiative.
Speaking at the National Agribusiness Dialogue in Accra, the President stressed that factories cannot thrive without reliable access to local raw materials.
He noted that the success of his 24-hour economy plan depends heavily on resolving this supply chain gap.
“The 24-hour economy cannot work if factories don’t have consistent local inputs,” he said. To address this, he revealed that several irrigation projects are currently under construction or being rehabilitated to ensure year-round farming and dependable supply to local industries.
As part of efforts to modernise agriculture, President Mahama announced that over 600 farming machines will be procured and distributed through 11 newly established Farmer Service Centres across the country.
These centres, he explained, are not meant to sell equipment to farmers but to provide essential services like land preparation and harvesting. “Farmers don’t need to own tractors—they need access to services. These centres will be managed by the private sector for better efficiency,” he stated.
