The conflict has expanded, not ended

Former Attorney-General Martin Amidu has cautioned against what he described as misleading public optimism surrounding the resolution of the Bawku conflict, warning that violence has intensified rather than diminished.
He noted that between January and December 2025, the scope of the conflict expanded to include Binduri, Garu, and Tempani districts, resulting in increased fatalities.
“The scope of the Bawku conflict has expanded for the first time since its inception in the 1950s,” Amidu said.
He cited heavy security deployment at Manhyia Palace during the conclusion of the facilitation process as evidence that tensions remain unresolved.
“The reported level of security alerts me to the fact that the euphoria being generated may be an unnecessary detraction from the real tensions on the ground,” he stated.
Amidu argued that portraying the mediation as a final resolution risks underestimating unresolved grievances and could provoke further instability.
He warned that any misstep in handling the process could have serious consequences for residents of Bawku and surrounding communities.
