The dead are not gone forever — Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang honours fallen heroes

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has delivered an emotional tribute to the eight victims of the August 6, 2025, Ghana Air Force helicopter crash, recalling fond memories of working with some of the deceased and praising their dedication to national service.
Speaking at the interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, the Vice President reflected on her professional collaboration with the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and other officials. She described them as individuals with “unwavering focus” and “an unambiguous resolve” to serve Ghana.
Recalling her work with Dr. Boamah on the Ghana Armed Forces Council, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said they had pledged to take their responsibilities seriously, clearing agendas quickly and following up on assignments to ensure progress. “You had a positive reaction to the prospect of working with me; I was even more excited by the prospect of learning from you,” she said.
Quoting Ivorian poet Bernard Dadié, she reminded mourners that “the dead are not gone forever” and remain present in the world around us. “You are always with us, my colleagues in the business of resetting our country… thanks for leaving these gifts, and more, with us,” she added.
The Vice President expressed gratitude for the victims’ selflessness, sacrifice, and belief in Ghana’s potential, praying that their legacy would inspire the nation to move forward with unity and determination.
The crash, which occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including senior government officials and military officers, as they travelled to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Community and Cooperative Mining Programme.
