Decision by Majority MPs on Foreign Affairs Committee to visit Ghana’s embassy in DC a wasteful ride

Chairman of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, H Kwasi Prempeh, has described as wasteful attempts by the Majority MPs on Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament to visit the Ghana Embassy in Washington, DC.

Early this week, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that he had sacked an IT staff and dissolved the IT department after an audit revealed that the IT department had redirected Visa Applications, among others, to a private company, which was making money off the government.

He shut down the embassy but reopened it after a day with a new set of staff to man the place and ensure accountability.

Addressing the press, the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament condemned the corrupt act, indicating that they will visit the embassy to ascertain things for themselves.

However, the decision to visit the embassy has been condemned as wasteful since they can get briefings from reports put together and provided by the minister.

H Kwasi Prempeh, who added his voice to the condemnation, said, “Wasteful free ride to DC. What exactly do you hope to find there that a report from the Minister or Ambassador can’t tell you?”
