There’s no seriousness in the fight against galamsey—Afenyo Markin

Majority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has questioned the seriousness of the government in the fight against galamsey.

According to him, although the NPP government tried its best to fight illegal mining, he admitted that the structures to fight galamsey under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government were not strong enough.

Indicating that the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took advantage of the weak structures and made them look bad.

However, since taking over government, the NDC hasn’t shown any form of seriousness in the fight against illegal mining.

He spoke about the setting up of the GoldBod, where gold is bought from every source, regardless of how it was mined.

“They are now in government, they’ve set up the GoldBod, and they are buying gold from all manner of sources; they don’t care where the gold is coming from. I don’t see any seriousness about the fight against galamsey. I’ve not seen structures, manifest structures,” he said on Accra-based Joy News.
