They lied to Ghanaians – Bawumia slams NDC over ‘dumsor levy’

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched a sharp critique of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the Mahama-led government of betraying its campaign promises by introducing what he calls a “Dumsor Levy” — a new tax on fuel.
Speaking in Cape Coast during the final stop of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region, Bawumia said Ghanaians are witnessing a clear contradiction between what the NDC promised and what they are now implementing in government.
“The NDC has told a lot of lies. Everyone sees their lies every day. Last night, I hope you all saw it. They have introduced a dumsor Levy,” he said, pointing to the recently passed Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill which imposes a GH¢1 tax on every litre of fuel.
He recalled that the NDC had strongly opposed the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) introduced under the previous NPP administration, only to replace it with a costlier levy.
“Initially, they said they would scrap the E-Levy we had introduced, and they’ve done that. But now, they have introduced the Dumsor Levy, and it is eight times the E-Levy. Now, when you buy one litre of petrol, you will pay one cedi as tax,” he argued.
Bawumia gave a comparative breakdown to support his claim. “If you buy 1,000 cedis worth of fuel, you will pay 83 cedis as tax. With the E-Levy, if you sent 1,000 cedis to someone, you would only pay 10 cedis. But under them, for 1,000 cedis worth of fuel, you’ll pay 83 cedis.”
He warned Ghanaians to prepare for more taxes under the NDC’s watch. “And more is yet to come. By the time we get to 2028, Ghanaians will see that they have truly lied to us,” Bawumia said.
Looking to the future, he expressed confidence that the electorate will come to regret giving the NDC a mandate. “I believe that by then, they will ask us to come back and govern Ghana properly,” he concluded.
