Three dead, two injured in truck collision at Akyem Asafo

Three people have been confirmed dead and two others seriously injured following a fatal road accident involving three trucks at Akyem Asafo in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 12, along the Accra-Kumasi highway—a major route known for its heavy traffic and high-speed travel.
Eyewitnesses say the accident happened when a Scania truck with registration number GS 6429-11 collided with a stationary DAF trailer loaded with cocoa beans, which had broken down in the middle of the road. A Howo tipper truck with an unconfirmed registration number also became involved in the crash.
The impact of the collision was devastating, instantly claiming the lives of the Scania driver and two female passengers believed to be traders.
Emergency personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at Bunso, supported by teams from the Suhum command, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), and the Ghana National Ambulance Service, swiftly responded to the scene. They conducted rescue operations and managed traffic in the area.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue for preservation and identification.
The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether negligence played a role in the fatal crash.
