A Togolese national accused of orchestrating a high-profile robbery in Accra has been referred to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital after exhibiting disturbing behaviour, including signs of coprophagy — the act of consuming one’s own faeces.
The suspect, Adinda Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, who claims to be a businessman residing in Ghana, is facing charges related to a robbery that occurred on April 13, 2024, in East Legon.
According to police, Moudjibou allegedly attacked a medical doctor and stole several high-value items, including $200,000 in cash, a gold waist chain valued at GHS20,000, a gold necklace worth GHS18,000, gold earrings, and a registered pistol belonging to the victim’s husband.
After the incident was reported, Moudjibou fled to neighbouring Togo. A forensic investigation and international collaboration between Ghanaian authorities and Interpol Togo led to his arrest in Lomé and subsequent extradition to Ghana on May 14, 2024.
During police interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to a series of robberies and named an accomplice, Mohammed Djando, who is currently on the run. Moudjibou also claimed to have carried out the crimes with the assistance of a motor rider.
In court, the prosecution, led by ASP Richard Amoah, requested that the suspect undergo a psychiatric assessment due to his erratic behaviour while in custody.
“The suspect is behaving strangely — defecating and consuming his own faeces,” ASP Amoah told the court, stressing the need to determine Moudjibou’s mental fitness to stand trial.
The prosecution also sought permission to hold the suspect in the custody of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to ensure his safety and aid the ongoing investigation.
Presiding judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah granted the request, ordering that Moudjibou be sent to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation and remanded into the custody of the NIB until further notice.
