Transport fares to rise by 20% as drivers struggle with high costs

The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 20% increase in transport fares, effective Monday, March 17, 2025.

The increase is due to unbearable operational costs driven by rising fuel prices and expensive vehicle maintenance.

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 13, and signed by General Secretary George Baffour Owusu Afriyie, the association justified the fare adjustment by pointing to the recent surge in fuel prices, which have jumped from GHC12.99 to GHC16.23 per liter.

Additionally, the cost of spare parts, vehicle engines, and engine oil has skyrocketed, making it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to stay afloat.

The group expressed deep frustration over their financial struggles, emphasizing that, as self-employed individuals, they do not receive salaries from the government.

Many, they noted, are returning home empty-handed despite working long hours.

“How can we go to work and come back home with empty hands? We are not receiving pay from the government. And we are self-employed. We manage ourselves to take care of our families,” the statement read.

The fare increment is expected to impact commuters nationwide as drivers seek relief from the economic strain.
