Tsikata cancels 50th anniversary celebration after helicopter tragedy

Legal luminary Tsatsu Tsikata has announced the cancellation of his planned three-day celebration marking 50 years of legal practice, following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two government ministers.

In a solemn media release issued from his chambers at Fugar and Company, Tsikata wrote, “We are overwhelmed with grief, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.”

The statement was released on Wednesday, August 6, the same day the nation was plunged into mourning by the accident in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The helicopter crash, which is already being described as one of the darkest days in Ghana’s recent history, led to the deaths of:

  1. Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  2. Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
  3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  4. Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the NDC
  5. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  6. Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala
  7. Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu
  8. Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
