Gov’t launches probe into Nigerian boxer’s death in Accra

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, led by Kofi Adams, has inaugurated a seven-member Committee of Enquiry to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a match at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29 and was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Chaired by Ambassador Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio, the committee includes respected figures such as Peter Zwennes, Ekow Asmah, Samuel Bartels, Eddie Pappoe, Juliana Addo-Yobo, and Martin Engmann. At the committee’s inauguration on April 8, Kofi Adams stressed the gravity of the situation, saying it “cannot just be swept under the carpet.”
The committee has 21 days to submit its findings. Its mandate goes beyond Olanrewaju’s death, probing regulatory and medical standards in Ghana’s boxing scene and examining international collaborations.
It will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, evaluate whether international standards were followed, assess regulatory compliance from Nigerian authorities, examine the roles of officials present, and propose reforms to improve safety protocols and uphold the integrity of the sport.
