Two arrested in Elmina for attempting to smuggle 250 bags of cocoa beans

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with an attempt to smuggle 250 bags of cocoa beans out of the country.

The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation in Elmina on Sunday, June 8, 2025, following a tip-off received two weeks earlier about a syndicate allegedly involved in smuggling cocoa and illicit drugs to neighbouring countries.

According to a police statement, the operation intercepted a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number CR 726-25 around 11:00 a.m. on the day of the operation. The truck, loaded with 250 bags of cocoa beans, was being driven by one of the suspects, Andy Kwofie.

Upon interrogation, Kwofie identified Francis Armah as the intended recipient of the consignment. Armah was allegedly responsible for transporting the cocoa by sea to external markets. He was arrested later that evening.

The truck has since been impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast, and both suspects remain in police custody, assisting with further investigations.

The Central Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and safeguarding the country’s resources.
