Two suspects remanded over Homowo festival killings

Christian Saka Ahianyevi, 35, and Newtown Allotey, 26, have been identified as the main suspects in the deadly clashes that disrupted this year’s Homowo Festival at Omanjor in Accra.
The two men — a security guard and a dispatch rider — were arraigned before the Adabraka District Court and charged with conspiracy to commit crime, rioting with weapons, and murder.
They are alleged to have acted with 30 others who remain at large.
Presiding judge Mrs. Abena Owusu Omenyo remanded the accused into lawful custody, stressing that their pleas could not be taken at this stage due to the murder charge.
Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, prosecuting, said police investigations are ongoing, with efforts intensified to arrest the remaining suspects.
The incident occurred on August 30, 2025, during the Homowo procession and sprinkling of kpokpoi.
Prosecutors said the accused and their group blocked the Omanjor chief and his followers near the “Police land” area, accusing them of trespass.
The confrontation turned violent, with gunfire killing three men—Abubakar Ramadan Sarbahaka Nii Kwashiebu, Joseph Shaibu Dodoo, and Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan—and injuring several others.
When arrested, police found a locally manufactured pistol and machete on Christian, while 18 empty cartridges were recovered from Newton’s room. Both suspects are scheduled to reappear in court on September 29, 2025.
