UG halts admissions to six centres over accreditation concerns

The University of Ghana has suspended admissions into six satellite learning centres for the 2026/27 academic year following a regulatory directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The affected centres, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Tamale, Ho/Tsito, Wa and Sunyani, were cited for operating without accreditation.
GTEC cautioned that the centres are not authorised to run academic programmes and warned that qualifications from such facilities would not be recognised In a public notice issued on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
The regulator urged prospective students to verify accreditation before enrolling.
Dean of Distance Education, Prof. Olivia Kwapong, confirmed that no new students will be admitted into the flagged centres until the University meets all regulatory requirements.
“We wouldn’t have to admit new students into these centres. We have to go by the regulations of GTEC,” she told JoyNews.
She noted that continuing students will remain unaffected and will be allowed to complete their programmes under the standard “teach-out” arrangement.
Incoming applicants will meanwhile be redirected to accredited centres, with potential postings to Accra, Tema, Kumasi or Takoradi depending on their zones.
Prof. Kwapong added that GTEC officials have already inspected the facilities and provided directives for compliance. The University is undertaking procurement processes for structural assessments and upgrades required to meet accreditation standards.
She assured students that the validity of their certificates remains intact, emphasising that all certificates are issued solely from the main campus.
