UG lecturer blames gov’t for KATH doctor’s death

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has launched a scathing critique of the government, accusing it of neglect and failed leadership following the death of Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori, an emergency physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Mr Asante expressed deep sorrow and outrage, blaming the state for failing to provide the critical facility that could have saved Dr. Adu Ofori’s life in an interview on the JoyNews AM Show.

“Today is a very sad day for me, as a doctor who dedicated his life to saving others was abandoned by the very state he served when it was his turn,” he said.

He condemned what he described as a pattern of leadership that prioritizes self-interest over the welfare of citizens.

“We have leaders who are insensitive, selfish, and lack vision — wicked leaders who enrich themselves while ordinary Ghanaians suffer, yet still expect performance from the people. That is very unfair,” he stressed.

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, the tragedy is a reflection of misplaced priorities and rampant misuse of public funds that could otherwise improve critical health infrastructure.

“Look at the facility the doctor needed to save his life — we simply could not provide it,” he lamented.

He further questioned the integrity of national spending, particularly in relation to healthcare.

“How much of our resources go into corruption and waste?

How much is spent on election campaigns with state money that should be saving lives?” he asked pointedly.
