UK-based lawyer hails Mahama for Economic Turnaround

A UK-based Ghanaian legal practitioner, Senyo Le Grand-McKenzie, has applauded the John Mahama-led administration for what he sees as a swift and impressive turnaround of Ghana’s economy, less than six months into its new term.

Le Grand-McKenzie contrasted the current state of the economy with the pre-election period, describing the change as both significant and promising in an interview with GHOne TV.

“I would say comparatively, the economy before we were here, during the campaign time, it was really at the verge of collapsing. Ghana was really going the path of being collapsed completely in terms of the economy,” he said, recalling the hardship and economic instability that characterized the final months of the previous administration.

He went on to describe the situation Ghanaians faced before the 2024 general elections as dire. “Life for almost everybody in the country was quite unbearable,” he stated, pointing to the severe strain on livelihoods and household incomes at the time.

However, Le Grand-McKenzie believes that much has changed in just a few months. He commended the current government’s economic policies, crediting them for injecting new life into a struggling system. “But soon after the election, the current regime has put a lot of things in place, especially the policies that have actually turned the economy around,” he noted.

According to him, the effects of these policy shifts are not only visible within Ghana but have also caught the attention of the diaspora. “Instead of the downturn, the economy has actually shot up, and everybody in the diaspora is really, really amazed,” he said.

Describing the sentiment among Ghanaians abroad, he added: “When you speak to 10 out of 11 people, they’re all happy. They’ll tell you the trajectory the new government is going.”
