Under NPP, the economic situation worsened – Dr. Dompem

The Ashanti Region plays a vital role in Ghana’s economy, standing out as a significant center for business activity.
Dr. Thomas Kofi Dompem, the CEO of Obibini Blackman Company Limited, highlighted this during an interview on the Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John.
He pointed out that the region is a major hub for various business owners, traders, factory operators, and repairers, making it a critical area in the country’s economic landscape.
“When considering business owners, traders, factory operators, and repairers, the Ashanti Region stands out as a significant hub in Ghana,” he said.
He emphasized that it would be difficult to find another region in the country with such concentrated economic activity.
This economic importance means that any financial instability or downturn in the country is often felt most intensely in Ashanti.
Dr. Dompem also touched on the historical context of Ghana’s economic challenges. He reflected on the period under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, when concerns were raised about high taxes, excessive port duties, and a weakening cedi.
“During the NDC administration, concerns were raised about high taxes, excessive port duties, and the weakening cedi,” he noted. At the time, the cedi’s exchange rate to the dollar stood at 4 cedis.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), which later took over governance, had criticized these issues.
However, Dr. Dompem pointed out that the situation worsened once the NPP assumed power. “However, when the NPP came to power, the situation worsened,” he stated.
