Unexplained wealth must be scrutinised – Naana Jane declares

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s determination to strengthen the fight against corruption.

She has backed calls for a legal framework that would empower the state to scrutinize and question the unexplained wealth of both public and private officials.

Addressing the issue, she underscored the urgent need for legislation that holds officeholders accountable, revealing that the government plans to table the long-anticipated Conduct of Public Officers Bill before Parliament.

According to her, the revised bill will be shaped by a broad range of perspectives, ensuring that it serves as a lasting and credible tool in promoting integrity within public service.

“The revised Conduct of Public Officers Bill will contain the views of CSOs, Anti-Corruption Institutions, the media, the international community, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that this bill stands the test of time,” she assured.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also emphasized that the fight against corruption cannot be won without adequate funding for key institutions. She called for a financial model that protects anti-graft agencies from political interference and equips them to operate independently.

“We must ensure also that we have sustainable financing for anti-corruption institutions to reduce the influence and enhance independence,” she stressed.
