Unfinished road projects cost Ghana over GHC 100 billion

The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry has revealed that the previous administration under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) left behind an overwhelming GHS105 billion in financial commitments related to road and infrastructure projects.

The Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, Emmanuel Cherry, disclosed that the figure covers contracts awarded for roads, bridges, overheads, and other related infrastructure. However, he noted that many of these projects remain unstarted or have yet to be completed.

“As we speak now, the commitment is GHS105 billion. These are contracts awarded for road construction, bridges, overheads and related infrastructure, but many of them have either not started or are yet to be completed,” he said.

Cherry further indicated that to enable contractors to continue work, the current government would need to release a substantial amount immediately.

“This means government now needs to cough up GHS21 billion for contractors so they can continue their work,” he stated.

He referenced the ministerial vetting of the current Minister for Roads and Highways, where an initial commitment figure of GHS100 billion was disclosed.

At the time, funds available for ongoing and stalled works were said to range between GHC 20 billion and GHC 25 billion.
