US authorities receive formal extradition request for Ken Ofori-Atta

Ghana has formally requested the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his Chef de Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore, from the United States to face corruption charges, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine confirmed on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

Dr. Ayine stated, “I have formally transmitted a request for the extradition of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and his Chef de Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore.”

He added that it is now up to the U.S. judicial authorities to determine whether there is a sufficient basis for extradition.

The extradition process follows a formal request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) submitted to the Attorney-General’s Office on November 19, 2025. A preliminary review by an international unit highlighted areas that required clarification and additional documentation.

In a letter dated November 25, the A-G’s office communicated these observations to the OSP. The supplementary documents were provided on December 9, 2025, completing the extradition request package, which was subsequently forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for transmission to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Earlier, on November 18, the OSP charged Ofori-Atta and seven others—including Ernest Darko Akore, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, Ammishaddai Owusu Amoah, Isaac Crenstil, Kwadwo Damoah, Evans Adusei, and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML)—with 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences.

Ofori-Atta remains in the United States and will be tried in absentia unless extradited to Ghana.
