US Embassy in Ghana Now Gives 3-Months Single Entry For B1/B2 Visas

Ghanaian Visa applicants at the United States Embassy in Ghana have said they were given 3months single entry Visa instead of 5 years multiple entry.

Whereas many Ghanaians heard of the news of similar arrangement by the US embassy in Nigeria, many Ghanaians did not realized same is taking in place in Ghana.

The new rule, which took effect on July 8, 2025, affects all new applications for B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), and B-1/B-2 combination visas.

Applicants will now be granted visas that allow them to enter the U.S. only once within a three-month period. Previously, Ghanaian visa holders could travel to the U.S. multiple times over five years without reapplying.

According to the U.S. Department of State, this policy shift is the result of a global visa reciprocity review, which assesses whether U.S. citizens receive comparable treatment when applying for visas to other countries.

In Ghana’s case, the U.S. is seeking improvements in areas such as passport security, biometric systems, and mechanisms to address visa overstays.

In Nigeria, The Embassy clarified that this change will not affect those who were issued visas before July 8. All previously issued visas will remain valid under the original terms, including the five-year multiple-entry allowance.

Officials emphasized that this policy applies strictly to visitor visas and does not impact student, diplomatic, or employment-related visa categories.

They also stated that the new arrangement will remain under review and may be adjusted in the future, depending on the progress made in achieving reciprocity standards.

For now, Ghanaian travelers planning to visit the U.S. must prepare for the reality of shorter stays and a more limited travel window. Frequent travelers, in particular, may find themselves needing to apply for visas more often, potentially increasing both cost and administrative burden.
