Veteran journalist and former NMC chair Nana Gyan-Apenteng dies at 74

Veteran Ghanaian journalist and former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, has passed away in London.
He reportedly died on Monday at the age of 74.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng served as Chairman of the 8th National Media Commission from November 2015 to November 2018, taking over from Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere.
He was widely respected in media, communication, and literary circles, with more than four decades of experience as a journalist, editor, writer, teacher, and trainer. He also served as President of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) and was a consultant in communication, media, and culture.
Over the years, Nana Gyan-Apenteng held several significant roles. He was a former editor and columnist for The Mirror newspaper, and in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked as deputy editor of the London-based West Africa magazine.
After returning to Ghana in the 1990s, he joined the Third World Network, where he led the communication unit and edited the organisation’s monthly magazine, Africa Agenda.
Throughout his career, he trained journalists and served as a communications consultant for a wide range of institutions, including MTN Ghana, various United Nations agencies, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and STAR Ghana.
He also held a traditional title, serving as the Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng’s death is a significant loss to Ghana’s media and literary communities.
