Veteran NDC member, Cecilia Johnson is dead

Cecilia Johnson, a stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a tireless advocate for women’s empowerment, has passed away at the age of 79.
Family sources confirmed her death on Monday, 22 September, though the cause was not immediately disclosed.
Johnson’s life and career were deeply intertwined with Ghana’s democratic journey. She first came to national prominence as general secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement, the influential group that championed women’s rights during the 1980s and 1990s.
Her leadership there opened the door to key government roles, including minister of local government under President Jerry John Rawlings.
Born in Awua-Domase in the then Brong-Ahafo Region (now Bono), Johnson was one of 12 children of Joana Bennett, a woman remembered in her own right as a community matriarch.
