Nana Ama McBrown pays GHC1,800 fine for inmate jailed a year for selling stolen appliances
Renowned actress and TV host Nana Ama McBrown has intervened on behalf of Kwasi Abaka, a 32-year-old farmer serving a one-year sentence in the Winneba Local Prison for aiding and abetting criminal activity.
Abaka’s predicament started when he unintentionally sold electronic products that were subsequently found to be stolen, including a pen drive, flat-screen television, woofer, and home theater.
These goods were given to him by a friend who works as the chief priest’s son at Ajumako Breman Essiam in the Central Region. His buddy put pressure on him to sell them right away so he could get money for Christmas presents.
“I sold the TV for Ghc 600, the home theatre for Ghc 130, two pen drives for Ghc 70 each, and a Bluetooth player for Ghc 50. I was given only Ghc 100,” Abaka explained.
Regretfully, Abaka was taken into custody soon after the transaction and stayed there even though his companion and the buyer tried to get him out on bail.
He eventually appeared in court, where he entered a guilty plea to aiding and abetting a crime. Because he was unable to pay the GHC 1,800 fine, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Inspired by his tale, Nana Ama McBrown stepped in via the Crime Check Foundation to cover Abaka’s portion of the fine. Abaka and his family were relieved when this deed made it possible for him to be released from prison.
Nana Ama McBrown’s action demonstrates her dedication to helping people in unfair situations and making sure they have an equal opportunity to start over after going through difficult times in the court system.
