Vormawor loses PhD funding over treason case

The Attorney General (AG) has filed a Nolle Prosequi to discontinue the treason felony charges against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a lead convener of the #FixTheCountry movement.

The charges, which had kept him entangled in a prolonged legal battle, have now been abandoned, marking the end of a case that has spanned over three years.

Following the AG’s decision, Barker-Vormawor took to social media to share his reaction, accusing the government of successfully derailing his academic aspirations.

“Since the intention was to impede my doctoral programme. I want to say Ayekoo to the Government and to Godfred Dame.

They succeeded. Kindly release my passport and take me off the No Fly List. And now that I have lost my funding for Cambridge; we need to address that too so I can finish my programme. Shalom,” he wrote.

His statement underscores the personal and professional toll the legal battle has taken on him. He lamented the loss of his Cambridge University funding and demanded that authorities return his passport and remove his name from the No Fly List, a restriction that has prevented him from traveling freely.

Barker-Vormawor’s legal troubles began on February 11, 2022, when he was arrested upon arrival from the UK. His detention was linked to comments he allegedly made about staging a coup if the government proceeded with the controversial e-levy.

He was formally arraigned on February 14, 2022, and later committed to stand trial at the High Court. Despite numerous appearances before Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, the case had yet to commence before the AG’s latest decision to withdraw the charges.

A Nolle Prosequi is a formal legal notice indicating that the prosecution has decided to abandon a case and will not proceed with the trial.

While this move effectively ends the treason felony charges against Barker-Vormawor, his latest comments suggest that he sees the damage as already done.
