WAEC explains sharp decline in 2025 WASSCE pass rates

The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, says the 2025 WASSCE results are an accurate reflection of what candidates produced in the examination hall.
He made the comments during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, following widespread concern about the sharp drop in pass rates compared to the past five years.
Mr. Kapi acknowledged that the 2025 results marked a significant shift from the consistently high performance recorded in previous editions of the exams.
“What we’ve seen this year obviously is a departure from the figures that you are seeing — a departure from what we have been seeing,” he explained.
“There has been quite a high pass rate in all the subjects, but this year unfortunately, we have a smaller number passing.”
He stressed that WAEC had thoroughly verified the scripts and processes to ensure the integrity of the outcomes.
“We have done all our checks, we’ve looked at everything, and on our part it is a true reflection of the performance of the candidates,” he said.
Mr. Kapi reiterated that as an examining body, WAEC’s responsibility is to conduct the assessment and report results exactly as they emerge from the marking and verification process.
“We would always conduct examinations and put out results as expected,” he noted.
