WAEC supports tough sanctions against exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has endorsed the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) decision to dismiss any official implicated in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Head of National Office, Dr. Rosemond Wilson, stressed that such actions were necessary to protect the integrity of the exams. “Yes, we back it so that it would deter others from engaging in such practice because it goes all the way to ruin the future of the children,” she told the Daily Graphic.

During a monitoring tour of centres in Accra, including the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School, Accra High School and the Sakyi Asare-Menako Hall, Dr. Wilson confirmed that an invigilator had been caught with a mobile phone containing questions from earlier papers. The case, she said, would be reported to the GES for further action.

While noting that the overall conduct of the exams had so far been smooth, Dr. Wilson called on all stakeholders to support efforts to curb malpractice.

“We are going to crack down on this issue of examination malpractice so as to bring it down to the barest minimum,” she emphasised.

The 2025 WASSCE is scheduled to end on September 19.
