The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, says the government will engage 5,000 unemployed graduates from agricultural and veterinary colleges as part of its newly launched Feed Ghana programme.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr Opoku explained that the move is aimed at strengthening the programme’s impact on the ground by directly supporting local farmers with modern farming techniques and professional assistance.
“We want all 5,000 of them to be part of the Feed Ghana programme so that they will be deployed to the various farms to assist our farmers to adopt modern techniques of farming,” Mr Opoku stated.
The Feed Ghana programme, officially launched in Techiman by President John Dramani Mahama, is a nationwide initiative that seeks to boost food production, create jobs, and reduce Ghana’s reliance on food imports.
Mr Opoku expressed concern over Ghana’s dependence on imported produce, especially tomatoes. “If Burkina Faso is able to produce the tomatoes, why is it that we cannot do it here in Ghana? We have the fertile soil and all the agricultural endowment,” he said.
He further disclosed that the government is establishing regional agricultural centres that will be fully equipped to support farmers.
“In the centres, we are sending tractors, combined harvesters, improved seeds, fertilisers, extension officers, and water pumping machines,” Mr Opoku explained. “Even if farmers don’t have money, the centres will provide services, and farmers can repay after harvest.”
