We didn’t impose a candidate on Akwatia – Jeff Konadu speaks out

Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jeff Konadu, has pushed back against claims that the party imposed a candidate on constituents of Akwatia following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with MyNewsGh, Konadu addressed public concerns surrounding the party’s selection of a parliamentary candidate without primaries, insisting that due process was followed in line with constitutional allowances.
“The death of our MP, Honourable Ernest Yaw Kumi — it’s not true that it wasn’t announced,” Konadu stressed. “The day the man passed on, it was everywhere. It was done through parliamentary processes. What announcement again do you want to see?”
Konadu dismissed suggestions that the party used the situation to force a candidate on the people, explaining that the decision not to hold primaries was well-considered and based on consultations with party stakeholders at all levels.
“Our Constitution allows us to select a candidate given certain circumstances,” he said. “We thought that we would use that version rather than going through a painful primaries.”
