We didn’t listen, and it cost us

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has openly acknowledged the mistakes made by the party that led to its defeat in the December 7, 2024, elections.

Addressing party members in Takoradi as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the key reasons behind the party’s loss.

“We refused to listen. The big issues that people complained about were; cost of living, arrogance of power, and the debt restructuring program,” Bawumia said. He continued, “The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios.

We never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened.” These statements shed light on the internal challenges faced by the NPP, as Dr. Bawumia admitted that failure to heed party advice contributed to their downfall.

Also on the same platform, Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and former Presidential aspirant emphasized the need for unity within the party. He stressed that without unity, the NPP’s bid to recapture power would be impossible.

He quoted several scriptures to support his point, including Mark 3:25 and Matthew 11:17-18, stating, “A house that is divided against itself will not stand.”

In addition to stressing unity, Hon. Agyapong urged the NPP’s National Executives to grant amnesty to those who had been aggrieved and left the party, or who had been dismissed for various reasons. He believes that bringing these individuals back into the fold is crucial for rebuilding the party.

Hon. Agyapong also took the opportunity to apologize to all Ghanaians for any wrongdoings the NPP or its leading members may have committed during the eight-year period.
