We don’t take our francophone membership lightly – Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reaffirmed the country’s dedication to democratic governance, cultural diversity, and global cooperation during the 50th session of the Assemblée parlementaire de la francophonie (APF).

Addressing the assembly on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghanaian Parliament, and the people of Ghana, Bagbin extended gratitude for the warm hospitality shown to the delegation and applauded the APF’s role in uniting member nations through shared ideals.

Bagbin highlighted Ghana’s elevation from observer status to full membership of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) in 2024 as a clear testament to the country’s commitment to the Francophone community’s values of solidarity, cooperation, and democracy.

According to him, the recent formal admission of Ghana’s parliament into the APF goes beyond ceremonial recognition.

“This is a significant milestone in Ghana’s diplomatic and legislative journey,” he noted, adding that the move signals Ghana’s intent to deepen partnerships and share best practices with fellow member legislatures.

He reiterated Ghana’s readiness to make meaningful contributions to the APF’s work, particularly in areas such as enhancing legislative capacity and using parliamentary diplomacy to advance peace, sustainable development, and human rights.

Speaker Bagbin also urged the APF to resolve internal concerns using its own mechanisms, stressing that collective success requires internal accountability.

“We must confront our own challenges and continue to build strong, united institutions that respond effectively to global shifts,” he stated.
