We had lifts and three meals a day – Kofi Amoabeng recalls Legon days

Businessman and former UT Bank boss Prince Kofi Amoabeng has shared nostalgic memories of his time as a student at the University of Ghana, revealing a campus experience that many of today’s students might find hard to imagine.

In an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, Amoabeng painted a vivid picture of university life during his time, recalling the size and structure of the campus, the quality of amenities, and the comfort students enjoyed back then.

“You go to university and you have to go on orientation because the university was so big, you needed to know your way around,” he said.

He noted that students in halls like Sabah, Akuafo, and Legon Hall were housed in annexes during their first year, with his own accommodation being at Okponglo. One particular memory that stood out for him was how modern and well-equipped the hostels were at the time.

“I was telling some young people I used to take the lift to Okponglo after class, and they were shocked,” he said. “They said, ‘What lift?’ I told them there used to be lifts working 24/7.”

Amoabeng also highlighted the quality of meals served on campus, something he believes would sound unbelievable to today’s students.

“You had three square meals with options,” he recalled. “You could say, ‘I don’t like yam and parasol, I want salad and chicken,’ or ‘I want banku,’ and you’d get it.”
