We had no choice but to act – Nana Akomea on early flagbearer election

Nana Akomea has expressed deep concern over growing divisions within the party, blaming them on internal competition for the flagbearer position.
The former National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, pointed to the harmful impact of tribal and religious tensions, warning that they were eroding the party’s unity.
“There is division over religion, over tribe, and all because of people eyeing the flagbearer slot. This is not good for the party,” he stated.
He revealed that the party’s National Council could no longer afford to remain idle in the face of the widening cracks.
According to him, the decision to hold the flagbearer congress in January 2026 was a strategic one meant to bring closure to the infighting.
“The National Council decided we can’t wait any longer for the congress. With all these divisions, sitting idle was not an option,” he explained.
“That is why we have scheduled the flagbearer election for January 2026 — to end all the chaos and confusion.”
The January 2026 election is expected to be a turning point, offering the party a fresh start amid rising pressure to stay relevant and cohesive.
