We must bow our heads in shame – UG lecturer mourns KATH doctor

Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has delivered a stinging rebuke to the government following the tragic death of Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori, an emergency physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

In an interview on JoyNews, Dr. Asah-Asante described the state’s failure to save one of its own as shameful and emblematic of a much deeper national crisis rooted in poor leadership and systemic neglect.

“We have not done justice to our departed brother. We must bow our heads in shame,” he said solemnly, calling the death of the frontline doctor avoidable and unjust.

He stressed that Ghanaians need to reclaim ownership of the country by demanding better from those in power and fostering a sense of patriotism that comes with accountability and justice.

“We need to organise ourselves so that we feel a sense of belonging to this state — prepared to fight and die for it when the time comes,” Dr. Asah-Asante urged.

Touching on the growing number of young professionals fleeing the country, he pointed fingers at failed leadership as a core reason for the brain drain.

“Leaders complain about young people fleeing the country, but who can blame them when leadership fails so badly? Ghanaians must open their eyes and vote out those who fail them.”
